Recurrent Vaginal Thrush

Recurrent Vaginal Thrush (RVVC)

Recurrent vaginal thrush (also known as recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis or RVVC) is more than simply experiencing repeated yeast infections. For many people, it becomes a frustrating cycle of temporary improvement followed by recurring symptoms that affect comfort, confidence, relationships and quality of life.

At Intimate Ecology, we understand that recurrent thrush is rarely explained by Candida alone. We take an ecological approach, exploring how the vaginal microbiome, hormones, immune function, mucosal health and lifestyle factors interact to influence why symptoms develop and why they continue to return.

Common symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Recurrent vaginal itching
  • Burning or soreness
  • Vulval redness or swelling
  • Thick white vaginal discharge (although discharge may be minimal or absent)
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Burning when passing urine due to inflamed tissue
  • Symptoms that recur before your period or after antibiotics
  • Temporary improvement with antifungal treatment before symptoms return

Not everyone experiences recurrent thrush in the same way. Symptoms may fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, through perimenopause or menopause, or following specific triggers. Some or many of these symptoms may not present. Recurrent thrush presents very differently to acute thrush.

Why does thrush come back?

While Candida is involved, recurrent vaginal thrush is often influenced by the broader vaginal ecosystem.

Contributing factors may include:

  • Changes to the vaginal microbiome
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Pregnancy or menopause
  • Previous antibiotic use
  • Individual immune responses
  • Biofilm formation
  • Non-albicans Candida species
  • Diabetes or altered glucose regulation
  • Lifestyle and general health factors

Understanding which factors are relevant to your individual presentation helps guide a more personalised treatment approach.

When should you seek support?

You may benefit from a consultation if you experience:

  • Recurrent vaginal thrush
  • Symptoms that return after antifungal treatment
  • Persistent itching despite negative test results
  • Suspected non-albicans Candida
  • Thrush associated with your menstrual cycle
  • Recurrent symptoms during pregnancy
  • Thrush during perimenopause or menopause
  • Ongoing vulvovaginal symptoms without a clear diagnosis

Our approach

Rather than focusing solely on eliminating yeast, we work to understand why the vaginal environment has become vulnerable to recurrent symptoms.

Your consultation may explore:

  • Your symptom history and previous treatments
  • Hormonal influences
  • Medical history and medications
  • Diet and gastrointestinal health
  • Lifestyle and stress
  • Previous pathology results
  • Vaginal microbiome testing where clinically appropriate

Every treatment plan is individualised and may include dietary and lifestyle strategies, nutritional and herbal medicines, probiotics, vaginal therapies, hormonal considerations and approaches that support restoration of a healthy vaginal ecosystem.

Looking beyond Candida

At Intimate Ecology, we believe recurrent vaginal thrush is more than simply a yeast infection. By understanding the relationship between the vaginal microbiome, hormones, immune function and the surrounding ecosystem, we aim to identify the factors contributing to recurrence and develop a personalised treatment plan that supports long term vaginal health.
